Year 6, Book 10

10. The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson
Wilkerson looks at the migration of African-American’s from the South to the North and West through the lens of three people. She follows a woman from Mississippi to Chicago, a man from Louisiana to California, and a man from Florida to New York. She apparently interviewed thousands of people in the writing of this book and chose to concentrate on the stories of these three people and their families following their stories from the 1930’s to the present. Each of their stories explored a different reason for choosing to migrate, and did bring the question to my mind of whether or not these people’s lives were better because of their migration. Certainly they were different, but better I’m not sure about. It was an interesting and informative book although possibly a bit overlong. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the subject matter though. I give it a 7 out of 10.
